Starfox Flies Cubewards

Screenshots, scramble!

Posted by Staff
Starfox was a landmark title for the SNES, flexing its Super FX chip with justifiable pride. The N64 sequel that followed was also quite enjoyable at the time. However, the Gamecube generation haven’t yet experienced a decent Fox McCloud title, with Starfox Adventures falling woefully short of the mark. Since then, development duties have been handed to Namco, and now Starfox appears to be back on the right path.

The latest screenshots point towards several new features worthy of mention. Fox, Slippy, Peppy and the other one can now enter and exit vehicles at will: switching between Landmaster tanks and their airborne Arwings as necessary. Alternatively, they can remain on foot, enabling the player to investigate the ins and outs of various buildings that punctuate the landscape.

The multiplayer feature has also been re-invented. The four player dogfights will return, but there will now be an additional co-operative mode allowing three other wing-mates to join in the action. No release date has been set as yet, but we’ll let you know as soon as it has.

Well, I have to agree with you. There's nothing much new or interesting there. In fact, the 2x2 mutiplayer screen looks like a Sonic title.

I agree with the article though. StarFox Adventures was a complete waste of space. It was obviously rushed by Rare to get all the things it was doing for Nintendo finished. Once clear the staff could start their new rich lives with Microsoft ... the sellout bitches. What have the bafflingly acclaimed Rare given us since that big deal? "Grabbed by the Ghoulies" or as I like to call it "A Handful of B******s"

I think Starfox has potential as a series. Problem is it has strayed to more character gameplay, whereas when it first came out, the Arwings were the centre of the game. You flew along, shot everything and had fun.

Starfox needs to return to these roots. Starfox 64 was the last good game in the series, because it focused on the vehicles more, since it's a simple shoot em up game anyway. Now it's become more character focused which I think is a big mistake, or at least thats what I'm getting from what I've seen (I could be mistaken and hope I am).

Nintendo have to stop selling some games on the multi player aspect, as I'm not sure it works for all of them . Starfox is about shooting and following the unfolding story. If the multiplayer part plays second fiddle to this then all is good, I just hope it works out, because we don't need another Starfox Adventures to tarnish the series. I hope Namco prove us all wrong, cause I don't see them doing a RARE botch on it (I'll cross my fingers after their last Ridge Racer effort). We need to see some single player screenshots of big bosses being crushed, not boring multiplayer shots.

I'd like to see a DS version at some point too.
