When the DS was first announced, it did seem like it could have been a knee-jerk reaction to the mounting pressure coming from the direction of Sony and their PSP. Many observers were sceptical about the enthusiasm of third party developers to properly engage with this unusual twin-screened, touch sensitive technology. Now that the DS launch has begun, the plan seems more credible every day.

Although some of the games listed below might be working titles, or simply technical demonstrations of the DS’s capabilities, it gives a good indication of where this is leading. There’s a reassuring number of Miyamoto titles, some Capcom favourites and some highly original Pac-man games from Namco.

Oh my god look! There's.. there's.. there's nothing I haven't seen before!

The size of the Nintendo die-hards shrinks with every subsequent hardware release, gimmicky add-ons included. I don't see this being any different.

We don't need no stinking die-hards ... it just gives the corporates the impression that what they're doing is right. The die hard keep hanging on and the corporates pump out less interesting or innovative stuff, perpetuating the situation.

Hanging on a brand is just wrong. You know it makes sense.

There are some titles in that list that may only be released in japan only, such as lawyer game series Gyakuten Saiban (which I'd like to see a release outside of japan, but is unlikely). On a more positive note, it's not a suprise to see a few familiar titles in the list, Schnide. This happens with every console, there are always some familiar titles or series. In a perfect world every game for a new system would be a brand new idea. However we don't live in a perfect world.

I feel Nintendo are giving us the best of both worlds. I have no problem with this, since i"m sure Sony have a similar line up for PSP, of new and familiar games and series. I'll be happy with MG Acid and Syphon Filter on PSP, as I will Mario Kart, FFCC and Dragon Quest on my DS. Remember we want these systems for entertainment. If you see nothing that interests you, then simply vote with your feet. It's kind of unfair to prejudge any game coz it's established or well known series.

Next you'll be saying Mario Kart is rubbish game, which is complete rollox. If games like this help sell the DS, then so be it. It can only help bring forward those original titles we crave, sooner. It'd be nice to have some guaranteed or well known good titles on release, since those are the ones most folk will buy. You have to try and keep an open mind, since the list is a start, and not the end.

Joji,

I mean with regard to Nintendo's whole approach with the DS rather than just the games line-up - I fully appreciate what you're saying about the old and new mixes.

The problem I have is that Nintendo still don't seem to have abandoned their stubborn "our way is right" approach to a market which has outgrown way beyond them.

I did however see your response to the new Zelda screen and I certainly hope you're right.. and I also hope it isn't too little, too late.

Saying that, if Nintendo went software-only and multi-platform, I think I'd live.

I am not a die hard Nintendo fan, in fact I have an Xbox, however I must disagree with you about the DS. Maybe it's just me but I am bored to tears of the same old games coming out over and over again. Metal Gear Solid, GT4 etc etc. These will be great games I know, but I've seen it all before. I don't think Nintendo are being stubburn and saying "our way is right", rather I think they are realising that the industry is going in a certain direction, lead by Sony and Microsoft towards the media/music/intergration/comunication side. Nintendo know that they have no speciality in these areas. As a result their choice is to either try to keep up with Sony and Microsoft by following this trend without having the expertise (as Sega did resulting in failure), or try to diversify and do things differently. If it means the get a smaller market or a different market than their competitors then so be it. I would rather have a Nintendo which is brave enough to do things differently than a Nintendo trying to keep up with the big boys and turning into the next Sega. Good on you Nintendo - and by the way I think the is brilliant.
