Sega to co-publish Matrix MMORPG

The saga continues online.

Sega of America and Warner Bros Interactive have just announced that they will be co-publishing "The Matrix Online", due for release in November 2004. Jason Hall, Vice-President of Warner Bros Interactive seemed pleased to have Sega on board. "Utilising state-of-the-art graphics techniques and a revolutionary tactile combat system, The Matrix Online uniquely possesses the true potential to cross over into a mass market of online gaming."

Indeed, The Matrix name certainly has the potential to summon masses of players, and providing that nothing goes disastrously wrong over the next six months, this could be the MMORPG to watch for. The line between game and reality could soon begin to blur in a deeply unsettling way...

This could be the MMORPG to watch for floating next to a nice, big turd in the proverbial toilet.

Nice work SEGA.

This was, in fact, the legendary 'Segaton' bombshell.

Wowzer.

I'll keep an open mind with this one. I know the announcement might not blow some, away after the strange ending to the trilogy, but it has potential especially when most rpgs are going for the fantasy world angle all the time. Don't forget Sega aren't newbies to the rpg market. They have plenty of experience to bring along for the ride, and I'm also sure that their experiences with PSO will prove invaluable.

This seems like a natural step into another online game for Sega. PSO started something special, letting folk from different nations be able to communicate and play via the same game, no matter what language you spoke, that in itself has changed things online. Perhaps Sega just want another slice of online pie, especially since FFXI (and soon Front Mission Online) is taking plenty for Square. MS will also have True Fantasy Live Online up soon too, so it's gonna be a battle for HP/MP and minds. Besides, I'm sure the combat in Matrix should be with guns and hand to hand, which is no bad thing in my book. Isn't more variety in online gaming what we need, anyway?

Speaking of rpgs I gotta pick up that Shining Force on GBA, another classic given life again, thanks Sega.

I cannot see how this would blow anyone away ... Sega to produce MMORPG based on self destructed movie IP.

The most amazing thing about this story is that it proves some of Spong's sources aren't all liars or fabrications. http://spong.com/x?art=6607 ... this Sega "insider" was correct in telling them that this was not of interest to fans. I hope this is a new trend in Spong's news which has gotten more vapid and outrageous in the last few months ... ex. "Timesplitters 2.5" story!
