In an informative interview with the official PlayStation website, SCEE COO David Reeves made some startling comments regarding Sony's plans for its upcoming gaming hardware.
Interestingly, when discussing PlayStation 3, Reeves revealed the possibility of several breeds of PS3 hardware, stating that "...there might be a normal PS3 for gamers, who just want to play the movies and have better games." But he also stated that there could be a "home server" version, boasting "all-singing, all-dancing features with maybe a hard disk drive."
Then, regarding PSP, Reeves went on to say, "Games will probably come out with no regional coding". Surprising news if true - and good news for impatient gamers. But it's by no means unheard of, since Game Boy has also lacked regional coding of any description. He also made comments on the possibility of PSP movies: "I think [the movie industry] will come up with quite a few surprises, so that you'd want to buy a movie on UMD as well as having it on DVD. Maybe."
Of course nothing is certain at this point, but we hope to give you something a little more concrete come this May's E3 in Los Angeles.

Hopefully we won't have to buy the same game twice to play on the PS2 and PSP... if you could somehow transfer your PS2 game to the PSP or UMD, that would be a huge selling point for me.

Would be a nice option, but I doubt if we'd see that. All sounds good to me. I just hope PS3 can still use my old PSone games.

Is this REALLY important to you?
Let's face it, the PS2 was the first backwardly compatible console. Would it be OK if PS3 was just compatible with PS2, or does it definitely need to be compatible with PSOne too? I mean, I can't see any reason why it couldn't play PSOne and PS2 games, but for how many generations do they need to keep backwards compatibility.

well if it is using the blu-ray discs, it wont be, since they are in a case, and the laser used for those discs is incompatible with dvd/cd optics
