According to various reports hitting the web this morning, the PC version of the massively anticipated id Software FPS Doom III will be released for PC in the US on April 15, with the European version hitting a day later.

The news comes from Doom III's publisher Activision's sales department in the US, from what we can gather.

In other news, fresh details from the Xbox version have been revealed. The console port of the game, which has been in production since July 2003, will feature all-new content not found in the original. The game will be among the first to make serious use of the machine's hard drive it was also claimed.

No release date for the Xbox outing has yet been announced or otherwise obtained, though id has always claimed that the wait would not be "significantly long."

We'll bring you updates as they break.

In other news noone will buy the XBox version, 'cos FPS suck on two stick console controllers!

Playing QuakeIII on PC and on PS2, whatever, is so far apart without a keyboard. And who wants to put a keyboard on their knee when playing console games, and where do you put the mouse???

True. Metroid Prime, however, had a great control method and used only one stick for movement. So there is at least one exception.

Yeah, but it did have lame-o auto targeting, though...

It's true that the quality of gameplay in FPSs is massively reduced due the general s**teness of the analogue sticks. There's too little travel and too much resistance, leading to over- and undershooting when trying to target. They really put the "anal" and analogue. They're only shamed by the PS2's "analogue" buttons, which have so little travel that difference between half-power and full-power can barely be perceived.

The N64 had the best analogue stick of all controllers to date. Shame it had about three games I had a slight desire to play.

I think it's time for head-mount targeting with a hand-held movement controller. Then all those LAN party goers could look like real t**ts whilst acting like real t**ts. Get to a proper party, get drunk and get laid, losers.
