Latest Burnout 3 Screens are Simply Astounding

Criterion’s crash-test not for dummies.

Posted by Staff
The latest screenshots from Criterion’s Burnout 3 have landed on our desks this week, and they have caused something of a stir.

Adding some rather succulent meat to the bones of last week’s announcement and three rather boring shots, this latest batch of development grabs details the online functionality available in the final PlayStation 2 version.

The Internet battles can support up to six players simultaneously, and are split into two distinct sub-sets. The classic race is augmented with battle mode, in which you must force your opponents to crash in the most dramatic and stylish way possible, a socially unacceptable, though highly enjoyable pastime.

And in other news, just look at the screens! They are some of the best looking grabs taken from PlayStation 2 code doing the rounds at this time, high-res and spectacularly detailed, making Burnout 3, one of the games recently snapped up during Electronic Arts’ UK spending spree, a must-own title.

We’ll bring you everything Burnout 3 in the run up to its release in September for Xbox and PlayStation 2.

Looking at the screens, it seems that the core game mechanic has changed from "drive fast, drive dangerously, but drive well" to "drive the other buggers of the road". I hope this is limited to Battle Mode and isn't to the detriment of the other game's modes - modes which made the predecessors a success.

Looking at the screens, it does look lush, but it also looks like a completely different game. The environmental lighting and shading is profoundly different the previous versions and appears artificial and over saturated. Are Criterion using a completely new version of Renderware? B2 only had a few graphical upgrades (specular bloom being the most noticable, IMO), but this looks completely different - like a SEGA game!

Internet battles, ay? How exactly is that going to work on Xbox when EA won't support Live? Looks like PS2 will have another killer driving game, beating all the competition - unless EA come to some agreement with Microsoft.

It does, and my opinion, a much more dull one.

The hyper-saturated comic-book look of Burnouts 1 & 2 were part of the games' charm.

This looks like and earlier Need For Speed, and while I'm sure it will be a more entertaining game than that, the look just does nothing for me. It looks visually dull. If I wanted a realistic Burnout experience, I'd just go out and drive 120 miles an hour in real life.

This should be way better than the previous burnouts!
