Exactly When is Too Early to Write off a Game?

Marvel Vs Capcom no more – EA to develop fighter in Canada.

Posted by Staff
It would seem that the hopes of 2D fighting games fans have been dashed this morning, with the news that Electronic Arts has signed up the Marvel Super Hero brand, inking a deal with the comic book house.

According to the company, EA will begin making a fresh all-formats 3D fighter at its Canadian studio. Interestingly, the game is set to feature over 100 characters from Marvel and Electronic Arts, making possible some of the strangest battles ever seen in a videogame.

Although EA stated that the deal will not have an impact on the rolling agreement Marvel has in place with Activision, it does seem that the future of the beloved Marvel Vs Capcom series has evaporated somewhat.

Marvel claims that the reason its agreement with Activision is not affected is due to the fact that it has only signed with Electronic Arts to make fighting games. And Marvel Vs Capcom is a fighting game, meaning that the chances of seeing any updates to the series, of which incarnations are sill in regular play in any self-respecting arcade, are slim to say the least.

We have tried to contact Capcom for clarification, but have been unsuccessful at time of going to press. If we hear anything of import, we’ll let you know.

The as yet untitled game will appear on all formats in late 2005.

Marvel are fast becoming the capitalist running dog.

They created a truly creative, sub-culture brand, but now they are showing their arse in Woolworths window in the name of sheareholder value. But they are selling the family jewels down the river... and eroding the value of their IP.

What will EA make of the Marvel franchise?

EA will use that brand until they can squeeze some money (yeah they both don’t have any shame) but what do you expect they are from US.

I'm no fan of the US, but it's not a US/non-US issue here.

Marvel are a US company, Apple are a US company, there are as plenty of good US companies as well as bad ones.

Equally, there are plenty of evil, profit-obsessed companies with no social conscience in other countries too. Look at Dyson - the UK Vacuum manufacturer. They totally dominate the UK market, James Dyson is worth over £500,000,000 yet he sacked his UK manufacturing workforce and moved production to Thailand in order to "remain comptitive".

It's not the getting shafted that hurts the worst, it's the lies they tell to justify themselves.
