According to highly-positioned retail sources, Outrun 2 will be released for Xbox. What’s more, the Chihiro conversion will hit stores across Europe on August 13 this year. You can even pre-order it in some places - amazing news.
Wait, there’s more. The same sources are also confirming a PlayStation 2 version, again slated to hit on August 13.
Amid the frenzy of excitement this kind of news brings, we contacted Sega. The firm was ready with its omnipresent bucket of cold water, and this statement: “Outrun 2 does not exist on either PlayStation 2 or Xbox.”
So what is going on? The date is likely to have been made up by retail planners, though the fact that the game is listed on both platforms hints that someone somewhere knows something.
Sega has stated to us time and time again, both on and off the record, that Outrun 2 is seen as a pure arcade game that will not make an easy transition to home console, not least due its diminutive size. However, this could all be subterfuge to protect an official announcement, perhaps at E3?
Stay tuned for updates in the coming weeks.
