Rumour Attack! GameCube Mario and Zelda This Year!

Nintendo fan finger-crossing reaches endemic proportions.

Nintendo fans reading this may want to sit down, perhaps get a glass of milk, and nothing stronger, if cliched console ownership demographics are concerned.

According to a report in Stateside gaming monthly EGM, Nintendo will this year release a new Mario game and a new Zelda game, both residing happily on the GameCube.

If this news is true, then the nay-sayers will be proven wrong as Mario 128 makes its way onto the current generation of Nintendo hardware, scuppering talk that the hugely anticipated return of Mario would miss the GameCube altogether.

A Zelda game - one that isn’t Four Swords - is also due out this year, according to the report, and will almost certainly be a return the cel-shaded wonder that was Wind Waker. Indeed, Nintendo has reiterated time and time again that the sublime engine powering the GameCube action RPG would be used in future games, as well as hinting at a Wind Waker sequel, so perhaps this is no great surprise.

The same article also claims that a true Zelda sequel for the Game Boy Advance is underway, more joyous news. Could this be a direct descendant of Link to the Past?

It’s all good, and you can expect clarification as soon as it breaks.
