Exclusive: EA to Publish LOTR Trilogy Next Year
Just a quick one, this: we have received word that Electronic Arts, the oft-criticised though biggest third-party publisher on the planet, will release an as-yet unannounced Lord of the Rings game towards the end of next year.

Carrying the Title Lord of the Rings Trilogy, we contacted EA for clarification over the question: is this just a compilation of games that are already on shelves, or is Trilogy a whole new game?

"EA does have plans to produce a number of further titles within our official Lord of the Rings license beyond our existing Return of the King game,” confirmed Glen O'Connell, head of PR at Electronic Arts UK. “We have already announced a Real Time Strategy game for the PC called The Battle for Middle-earth, which is due in Summer 2004, and we are currently looking into a variety of different options for further console-based titles using the official license. We hope to be able to announce more news in early 2004."

Interesting enough, however, EA insiders have stated, off the record, that Trilogy will be an all-new title in the franchise - massive news indeed. Perhaps LOTR Trilogy will be a full-blown RPG as arguably the franchise should have been from the outset.

We’ll keep you fully updated on this story as it develops.
