It’s all true. The game revealed yesterday, Virtua Fighter: The Ambition of the Judgement Six, is indeed Virtua Fighter Quest, news that has angered Sega and Virtua Fighter fans around the globe.
What was widely expected was a story-driven RPG featuring characters from the Virtua Fighter series. Instead, an all-new roster has been announced, with the game - aside from its title - bearing little relation to its much-loved beat-em-up parent.
Game details released yesterday are as follows: Ambition of the Judgement Six follows the quest of Sei, a 14 year-old boy, living in a world dominated by a massive Virtual Reality network known as Nexus. Nexus is a system that enables inhabitants of the world to conduct business across the floating city with ease. However, due its age and vastness, huge amounts of valuable data are lost, encoded in far-flung, dead areas of Nexus.
And this is where Sei comes in. His father is an engineer working on Nexus. By observing him at work, Sei has been able to learn how to hack the system and go looking for valuable lost data.
Of course, there is the ever-present evil force that wants to run the world and…yes, we’re getting as bored as you…so formulaic and uninspiring is the plot. Sei is accompanied by a 15 year-old cyberchick, so expect some kind of romantic sub-plot.
And what does this have to do with Virtua Fighter, you may ask. We asked exactly the same question. Well, sit down and take a deep breath. Hidden away in the Nexus are data units known as Virtua Souls. These carry information on special attack moves that were once performed by legendary fighters. And that's it.
So, will you be able to unlock fighters from the VF series and enter fighting tournaments? No, nothing like that. Sega has stated that the gameplay will involve simple battle input, as perhaps you’d expect from an RPG, not the explicitly detailed reaction-driven fighting/role-playing crossover fans had hoped for.
The bottom line is that this could be Any Game: The Ambition of the Judgement Six.
We’re going to stop here. We could include quotes from some of the VF fans we’ve spoken to over the past 24 hours, talk of their crushing sense of disappointment, of the openly acknowledged lack of respect VF Quest always attracted from Sega Japan employees, but we won’t.
Expect more details on this game as they are released.
