We have today been rattled by images and a press release from SEGA Japan, detailing a new game in the Virtua Fighter series.
As we are going to press, the screenshots taken from a game carrying the name Virtua Fighter: Cyber Generation. Sega lists the game as being an RPG, and it is Virtua Fighter after all. So is this Virtua Fighter Quest? If so, it bears no relation to what we were expecting.
We were told face to face by Yu Suzuki that Virtua Fighter Quest was going to be a GameCube-exclusive game. Cyber Generation is listed for PlayStation 2 as well as GameCube. Suzuki also said in the same session that the game would feature super-deformed characters with big heads, a la Virtua Fighter Kids. Cyber Generation shows character models that look like something more akin to a Nintendo 64 MegaMan title.
And there’s more. Dorimaga, Japan’s leading monthly gaming magazine, has made a big splash in its November issue proclaiming that it will run - as a world exclusive - the first screens, details and images taken from Virtua Fighter Quest. And, tellingly, it uses the title Virtua Fighter Quest, not Virtua Fighter: Cyber Generation.
Cyber Generation is an RPG set in the future in a virtual reality world. It is definitely - definitely - a Virtua Fighter game and an RPG for PlayStation 2.
We don’t know yet whether it’s Virtua Fighter Quest. SEGA Europe seems as us to see the game emerge today, so they’ve been as much use as one of those proverbially useless things.
Expect clarification as soon as is humanly possible.
