There has been rife speculation in recent months that Square is planning a remake of Final Fantasy VII, without question the most popular game in the series to date.

There was uproar lasting almost four minutes when Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children Turned out to be a Japan-only CG movie, not a gaiden off-shoot as was thought.

FFVII's fanbase has been quietly confident that a game set in the astounding, genre-defining Final Fantasy VII world would materialise at some point for PlayStation 2, or maybe even another platform, given that it stands as the best-selling SquareSoft game.

Well, according to Square Enix speaking in the latest issue of Dorimaga, this isn’t going to happen. The firm states that as Final Fantasy VII is playable on PlayStation 2, there is no need for a remake. However, a remake may occur if the PlayStation 3 does not play PSone games, a situation still somewhat vague.

It seems strange that Final Fantasy VII is suddenly at the forefront of the RPG community’s collective mind right now, especially given that FFXII is due to be unveiled in two week’s time.

These rumblings from the East surely mean something. As soon as we find out what, we’ll le t you know.
