Suzuki and Ishikawa on Outrun 2 - Brand new details inside!

Gears decision clutched by Sega

Posted by Staff
Sega has been making some noise about Outrun 2 over the past couple of days, bringing winces of delight to fans of what was the biggest arcade franchise the world had ever seen.

According to AM-2 producer Ishikawa-san, the game is halfway complete and will have a distinct focus on the social aspect of the game. He explained this by saying, "The beautiful girl in Outrun 2 is very important. You must make sure she has a great time in the Ferrari. You must drive excitingly and safely. The endings we have planned for Outrun 2 are determined by the girl's mood."

We like this. However, we would like a break from real life, as we're sure most gamers of driving age are constantly told to slow down by their partners… Outrun 2, the really annoying girlfriend simulator. Probably not.

Ishikawa also said the game is halfway complete and will be unveiled at Sega's AM-2 show this September, where it will go on public playtest. Other test locations in Japan, Europe and the US are under consideration.

Other interesting titbits come in news that, at present, the development team cannot decide what kind of gearing support to include with the deluxe version of the arcade cabinet. Interestingly, the use of a full Ferrari gate-shift and clutch, as enjoyed by the seminal F355 Challenge, is under consideration. So does this mean that Outrun 2 will take a more simulation approach to gaming?

Speaking exclusively to us, AM-2 chief and Outrun creator Yu Suzuki said, "Outrun will be an arcade game racer, not a simulator. We expect to continue making simulation games with other franchises. Outrun has to be playable to all gamers."

Great news, we're sure you'll agree. At this point in time, Outrun 2 is confirmed for the Xbox-powered Chihiro arcade platform, making an outing for the MS console a certainty. It may well migrate across to other platforms, depending on its initial success in the arcade and for Xbox around the world.

We'll bring you everything Outrun, AM-2 and Sega right here, as it breaks.
