We have learned that Microsoft may be poised to move its key driving simulator, presently the Sega GT series, away from Sega in a bid to challenge the awesome dominance of Sony’s Gran Turismo, as developed by Polyphony Digital.
As well as Sega GT which, despite a warm reception, was massively overshadowed by the PlayStation 2 game, the Xbox also hosts the Gotham series, with new versions of both games due out in the coming months.
However, they will both be playing second fiddle to Gran Turismo, scheduled to launch at the end of this year and without doubt, the leader in its field.
And of course, this will not do for Microsoft, whose relentless mantra is that the Xbox must do everything better than every other console. At this point in time, the sole area in which Microsoft is floundering is the delivery of a driving simulator of GT-type proportions.
Several outfits have been hinted at as a possibility for Microsoft to approach, not least makers of The Real Car Simulator VR-1. The firm has already released both a Nissan and Toyota version of its acclaimed PC sim, proving the ability to combine spot-on physics with negotiating with car manufacturers, a famously difficult task.
As we learn more on this, we’ll let you know.
