Game Boy Advance achieves massive sales

Can it really be two years already?

It seems like only yesterday when we first unwrapped our lovely Japanese Game Boy Advance system. New Nintendo portable hardware, the stuff dreams are made of. Then we realised that it was just a trumped up SNES with a rubbish screen and threw it away. Not really.

Only it wasn’t yesterday, it was two whole years ago, which is quite a long time really, given the console, especially now jacketed in its spanky new SP guise, still has that peachy new-console feel.

Anyway, as it’s the machine’s birthday this week, Nintendo Europe has released some impressive sales figures for the pocket rocket. For instance, did you know that in the UK, more than 2 million consoles have been snapped up since launch? And did you know that in the same period across Europe, more than 6.5 million consoles have been sold, with a massive 20 million games flying off the shelves too. Well if you didn’t, you do now!

Triumphantly, new UK boss Andy Williams said, “The success of Game Boy Advance in the past two years has been nothing short of phenomenal. The console has revolutionised handheld gaming and it's fantastic to see Game Boy Advance still going strong alongside the recently launched Game Boy Advance SP.”

In a press release issued to commemorate the event, Nintendo say “So join us in a birthday toast to the most fun you can have with your hands, and now in the dark as well; Game Boy Advance and Game boy Advance SP.” Which we thought was quite funny…

It’s also worth mentioning that the original model GBA is now only £50 - not bad at all - with the business class SP at £90.
