CELL Processor demos this year – PS3 for E3 2004?
According to reports surfacing today, Sony’s chief technical spokesman and renowned PlayStation genius Ken Kutaragi, has made some fresh promises regarding the delivery of the mystical CELL processor. As you may know, the CELL, co-developed with IBM and Toshiba, is earmarked as the data-crunching heart of the PlayStation 3, as well as several other, as yet undisclosed, applications.

Indeed, speaking at Sony’s shareholder meeting, Kutaragi stated that the initial phase of core development is complete, with prototypes ready for show within this fiscal year.

The prototypes will be able to give rolling demonstrations of exactly what CELL is capable of, meaning that by April of next year, PlayStation 3 technical demos will be available.

This now points to a possible roll-out of something of a tangible nature for PlayStation 3 at next year’s E3, taking place, as ever, in May in Los Angeles. Talk abounded in the run up to this year’s show of something of PS3 being shown behind closed doors, though this never happened, with developers close to SCE being left somewhat surprised at the lack of information.

This news also points towards PlayStation 3 beating the sceptics and making a showing sooner rather than later, putting it more in line with a late 2004 to early 2005 Japanese roll-out, though no doubt there will be a considerable panic on to deliver credible launch software in time for this generation of hardware.

We’ll bring you everything on PlayStation 3 as it breaks.
