In an attempt to spice up his regular beat-em-up sessions with his mates, techtv.com's Kevin Rose has come up with a rather novel mod for his Xbox controller.
Utilising a medium powered pest shocker, a couple of odds and ends from Radio Shack, a screwdriver, and a bit of electrical know-how, Rose has converted the controller so that, in place of the standard vibration effect, players are now greeted with a 20,000 volt shock. Subsequently, getting punched in the game has a significantly greater effect than it used to. And it hurts quite a bit more, too.
"Our MK sessions consist of four or five guys, beer, and a lot of yelling. As we get better at the game, the competition is growing more fierce," said Rose, "I started thinking, 'What could I do to make the gameplay more interesting, more exciting? We've added beer and gambling. There has to be something else.' Enter 'Xshok'."
