As of today, the PlayStation 2 goes online in the UK, finally launching the console’s online gaming offering in the country.

Sony hasn’t really made too much of a song and dance about launching the PlayStation 2’s network adapter, most probably because it fears spending a lot of money only to have Microsoft rubbish its work with a session of Xbox Live-waving, and understandably so.

Two games will be playable from day one, namely the excellent SOCOM: Navy SEALs and Twisted Metal Black Online.

Sony’s approach to third-party support for its online service is diametrically opposed to that of Microsoft’s, with publishers able to organise and implement their own functionality and pricing structure, rather than having to follow the strict and tightly controlled Xbox Live system, which, at present, offers little in the way of remuneration.

Proving popular with Electronic Arts, who famously couldn’t work with Xbox Live due to revenue share issues, Sony’s proposal sees a more open approach that may prove more expensive to the end user, though that end user will have more variety and freedom in the way he or she chooses to play.

SCEE promises that at least 15 more online titles will be on the market before the end of the year.
