Metal Gear Solid 3 – the truth
Speaking in this week’s Famitsu, Konami’s most serious Hideo Kojima revealed some key new elements to be found in Metal Gear Solid 3, due for PlayStation 2 early next year.

Following criticism that MGS2 was a little flat in terms of gameplay, Kojima spoke of a limb-breaking system to be added to the mix. This will entail Snake breaking his bones if he takes a tumble from too high up, coming into contact with moving objects or being shot. Kojima went on to talk about the fact that gunshot wounds often result in bone fracture, a fact somewhat overlooked.

He said that following the last two games’ urban and industrial settings, 60% of MGS3 will take place in organic settings, including the jungle, as previewed at last month’s E3.

Kojima went on to describe how he intended to make a “living and breathing natural world” that will see both human and animal enemies. Amusingly, animals defeated may be dissected and eaten, with parts of them stored in Snake’s inventory for later. However, these will rot over time, releasing a pungent smell that will attract animals and alert humans…

When asked about online play, Kojima confirmed that MGS 3 will have online rankings and other smaller features, though real-time online play has not been decided upon. However, he did say that the team is looking at the possibility of including full online gaming, though whether to release this for PlayStation 2 or Xbox is still up in the air.

Brilliant news, we’re sure you’ll agree. Keep it locked for all things MGS, as it breaks.
