Codemasters is readying Pop Idol for an autumn release on PC and PS2. Based on the unfeasibly popular TV show, the game is basically a cel-shaded rhythm-action type affair with a few neat features adorning it. The Duet mode, for instance, allows up to four players to compete, bashing buttons in accordance with their chosen ditty. There's also a confidence meter - if your timing slips off then your voice begins to warble and your dancing goes all middle-aged. Groovy.
Dancing beyond the call of duty, Pop Idol will also feature a Karaoke mode that can be used in conjunction with the 40 song soundtrack. That's right, all your (least) favourite smash hits are here: 'Baby One More Time', 'Like a Virgin', 'Livin la Vida Loca'… we could go on. But won't.
Pop Idol does look like quite a giggle, and with a fully rendered version of Simon Cowell making constant snide remarks, even anti-fans of the show should find some solace.
