Plenty more tweaks from Sony

PS2 Hardware
The Big Package.
Sony has announced the imminent release of the Playstation 2 Online Pack. It's a $199 package that comes with a Network Adapter fitted, amongst a smattering of other technical alterations.

The updated machine will make improved use of its DVD playback technology. The picture quality will be higher, and it will be compatible with rewritable DVDs. Film buffs can also dispense of those budget third party remotes - the new hardware has a built-in receiver and its own remote control. On top of that, Sony has even muffled the whirring of the internal fan, so PS2 devotees can lead a more tranquil existence.

Eye eye!
The Eye-Toy also made a welcome appearance at the Sony conference. It's essentially a motion-tracking, mini USB camera. It can take images of the player sat in front of the screen and convert them into their pixel form. This means that Eye-Toy compatible games will be controlled by people stood in their living rooms, bouncing around and flapping their arms wildly. 'Wishi Washi', for instance, has you soaping down windows as you imitate Mr.Miagi-style gesticulations. 'Wax on, wax off… wax on, wax off.'

To be packaged with 12 mini-games (in the vein of Wishi Washi) the Eye-Toy will cost around $40 when it's released in October. Hopefully, announcements of further Eye-Toy games will follow on.

Talking Headsets.
Sony are also releasing a USB headset in the States this September (at around $30). This will be used for communicating with other players online, or with offline games that make use of voice recognition technology. Expect a fair spread of team-based shooters and sports titles to take full advantage of the new peripheral.

Indeed, as Sony are making concerted efforts to build their online community further, the headset will find better and better use. This was amply demonstrated across a variety of EA Sports titles, with rivals cussing each other down to the ground.

Double 'Ard
Finally, Sony revealed the new PS2 hard drive. It will be a sizeable 40 GB and should be released alongside Square Enix's eagerly anticipated Final Fantasy XI. This will allow deeper customisation than in previous games, as well as securing your character in the online community, which, in the case of FFXI, will include both PS2 and PC users. Rah!
