Sega cans GameCube Sports support

New phase to hit grown-up consoles.

Sega of America has announced that it will no longer be releasing any Sega Sports titles for GameCube, in news that has rocked the Nintendo community.

Widely seen as a loss of confidence in the platform, Sega’s withdrawal follows lacklustre sales of its GameCube Sports offerings across the range, compounded severely by the market trouncing dished out by Electronic Arts. As you may recall, Sega admitted it underestimated EA’s dominance in the US market late last year, resulting in the firm suffering heavy losses.

“Nintendo GameCube is a fantastic platform for all genres of games,” said Sega in a statement. “Sega's entertainment properties have sold extremely well on GameCube and as a result we are placing priority and focusing our resources on delivering those titles to the platform moving forward.”

Not good news for GameCube owners, we understand, but if it’s too difficult to turn a profit when supporting a platform as a third party, this kind of thing is inevitable.
