Head of all things id Software John Carmack has spoken at great length about his team's testing of high end graphics cards on the looming monster that is Doom III.
"At the moment, the NV30 is slightly faster on most scenes in Doom than the R300, but I can still find some scenes where the R300 pulls a little bit ahead. The issue is complicated because of the different ways the cards can choose to run the game."
By NV30, Carmac is referring to nVidia's forthcoming GeForce FX card, the R300 is the chipset that drives the ATI Radeon 9700. And that's about where normal English ends. Later Carmack said things like "Per-pixel reflection vector calculations for specula, instead of an interpolated half-angle. The only remaining effect that has any visual dependency on the underlying geometry is the shape of the specular highlight."
From what we can gather, you will need a top-end rather expensive card to run Doom III. But you love it, so why not...?
Expect to see more on Doom, including an official demo release, in the next few months.
