Exclusive – first Spike Out details emerge

Nagoshi-san proves that whisky equals fighting.

If you have followed the ramblings of Amusement Vision boss Toshihiro Nagoshi over the past few months, you will have noticed something: a change has come over the man. From being the earnest developer behind the amazing Super Monkey Ball, Nagoshi has digressed into talking about his love of drinking.

His favourite tipple, it emerged, is the fighting juice whisky, which may be something to do with his other famous creation Spikeout, an online arcade smash throughout Japan in the late 1990's. Nagoshi has spoken for some time about the game, which he revealed would be made for Microsoft's Xbox Live online system, a decision he interestingly struggled with for some time.

However, now for the good stuff. As it turns out, Spikeout Extreme will be a highly customisable Streets of Rage in 3D affair. Players will be able to design their own characters in great depth, with several thousand combinations of hair, clothing and body-shape to play with.

However, the best news comes in the form of the multiplayer gang wars that will make up a great segment of the game’s appeal. In a console version of clan-play, Xbox Live users will be able to form teams and take part in huge, sprawling battles through some of the game’s cities. It is expected that organised events will take place across Xbox Live, although this is yet to be confirmed.

Furthermore, a detailed and dedicated combo system is being implemented into Spikeout Extreme, making the game more appealing to traditional 3D fighting fans.

All this will be set in expansive and deformable environments, with many players (the numbers have not yet been decided) battling it out in real time.

We hear it’s best played when tanked up on Bourbon too.

More, including screens, soon.
