Sony had a surprise hit on its hands in the summer of 1999 when it unleashed a quirky puzzler/platformer called Ape Escape to a curious audience of gamers. With its dynamic puzzle-based levels, AI monkeys and a genuinely intuitive analogue-based control system that made the use of the L3 and R3 buttons compulsory, Ape Escape made its very own dent in the industry timeline and positioned itself for a fine sequel on the PlayStation successor.
We will have waited nearly four years, but the long anticipated Ape Escape 2 has finally been given the go ahead for a March 2003 launch date. The game will remain very much the same in terms of control method, but the inclusion of several monkey-enticing gimmicks have broadened the spectrum for level design, allowing its developers to retain the magic of the first Ape Escape whilst incorporating fresh gameplay elements.
It’s a few months away though, so in the meantime feast your eyes on these screens or visit uk.playstation.com.
We like monkeys. You should like them too.
