PlayStation 3 chip ready in 2004
According to reports from Japan this morning, Toshiba will have the Cell microprocessor in production by 2004. As you may be aware, the Cell is widely believed to be the data-crunching workhorse behind Sony’s top-secret PlayStation 3 project.

According to Toshiba representatives, the Cell will represent a new breakthrough in data fiddling, with some dubbing it “a supercomputer on a chip.”

“Cell would obviously be the central chip for our next generation products,'' said SCEI spokesman Kenichi Fukunaga. "We're developing Cell in preparation for the time when every computer is linked to the Internet.”

You may well be aware that Toshiba worked closely with Sony on the PlayStation 2. Let’s hope the PS3 proves less of a hassle for developers.

We’ll bring you everything on PlayStation 3 as we get it.
