Sega has revealed the first batch of Sega AGES games it intends to release for PlayStation 2 to the Japanese press, sparking widespread prayer session in the US and Europe, with gamers heard imploring Sega gods to release the selection in the West.
The game list in full is:
Golden Axe
Space Harrier
Phantasy Star
Fantasy Zone
Alex Kidd in the Miracle World
Gain Ground
Tantoaru
Virtua Racing
Phantasy Star II
Phantasy Star IV: End of Millennium
Streets of Rage
Bonaza Brothers
Monaco GP
Last Bronx
All but four of the above will be direct ports from either the Mega Drive or Master System originals. Amazingly, Golden Axe, Fantasy Zone Space Harrier and Phantasy Star II will be re-made. Specifically, Phantasy Star will get a complete graphical make-over, in glorious 3D and will have extra gameplay squeezed in for good measure.
Incredibly, Golden Axe, Fantasy Zone and Space Harrier will be completely new games, according to Japanese reports surfacing this morning. Apparently, Fantasy Zone and Space Harrier will be in full 3D and, best of all, Golden Axe will a completely new game, some sort of sequel by all accounts. Exactly what Fantasy Zone, a 2D classic shooter, will do in a 3D environment will be interesting to say the least.
Sega Europe had no comment this morning on the possibility of a European release of these games, which incidentally, cost less that £13 each in Japan. £13!
As soon as we hear more, you’ll be the first to know.
