Upon attending a dinner with various Sega heads of studio earlier this year, we were staggered to learn of the working practices in place at the company, one of the most important in the global gaming industry.
Yuji Naka openly spoke of the lack of cohesive structure at Sega’s Japanese HQ, even to the point of joking that somewhere along the line, the firm’s entire back-catalogue had somehow gotten lost.
It seems that the firm is now putting this right, implementing a tier of management that will oversee all production and report directly to the board. As you may know, Sega is broken down into many different sections, dealing with all aspects of the firm’s complex and diverse business interests, from software development to distributing million dollar plus high-end casino equipment.
We can also reveal that Sega’s CRI subsidiary has finalised the third-party development tools for Sega’s two joint venture arcade projects, the GameCube compatible TriForce and the Xbox-based Chihiro. The firm plans to pitch a full development kit, believed to become freely available to prospective developers, and to companies that do not usually make arcade games. The plan will be to engender support for both systems, as part of Sega’s concerted drive to jump-start the flagging arcade scene around the world.
