PlayStation 2 sales pass new milestone
Sony Computer Entertainment Japan has announced that it has managed to shift over 40 million PlayStation 2 hardware units around the world. To put this into context, the PS2’s predessor, the PlayStation in its two incarnations, has shifted more than 80 million since its launch.

To further understand just how strong 40 million hardware sales really is, Nintendo’s best selling home machine, the Famicom, or NES to you and us, sold 62 million, the Sega MegaDrive shifted a mere 23 million and the Atari VCS, arguably the most iconic of home gaming machines, sold only 26 million.

Sony selling this number of consoles in such a short period easily puts the PlayStation 2 on track for being the best-selling games console ever. We’ll have to see the state of play in 2005 when the PS3 is unveiled.
