Activision snaps up Worms in shock announcement

Super bonus: Kathy Vrabeck quote inside!

In somewhat surprising news, Activision has announced that it has signed the next instalment of Worms from Wakefield-based Team 17 Software.

Activision lines up alongside Infogrames, Microprose, Sold Out, Ubi Soft, Hasbro and Virgin as a publisher carrying a Worms title, yet in almost a decade, no one has signed the game outright. It seems that Activision sees value in the franchise moving forward.

The announcement made involves “all-next-generation systems” in a global publishing and distribution deal. Amusingly, Activision declined to further the deal for a PC version in Korea, Taiwan and China.

“We are thrilled to be introducing Worms onto the next-generation console systems," said Kathy Vrabeck, executive vice president, global publishing and brand management for Activision. "The franchise has sold more than seven million units worldwide since its inception in 1995. Worms' unique humour, instant playability and addictive gameplay have remained popular across two generations of hardware with the franchise appearing on almost every platform. Now delivered in 3D, the game is sure to be even more popular than its predecessors drawing in a new generation of gamers around the globe.” Thanks for that, Kathy.

Interestingly, and as Kathy mentioned, the new incarnation of Worms is set to be rendered in full 3D and feature fully deformable landscapes.

Expect to see the all-new high-powered Worms 3 launch across the world on all home systems at some point in 2003.
