Infogrames, under the Atari label, has released the first footage from Driver 3, the hotly anticipated mission-based driving extravaganza from UK-based development house Reflections.
It seemed that the main purpose of showing the footage at this point in time was to show how the game world had developed, as no game footage proper was shown.
We have to say that we are hugely pleased with what we saw. It is a widely accepted fact that Driver and Driver 2 are some of the best games ever to be released on the PlayStation, though graphically they suffered a little at the hands of Sony’s wobbly polygon pushing.
This time around things have changed. Miami was the city shown in the footage, and it looked mighty fine too. Gone is the grid-like, isometric game environment. Miami is now presented as a huge, organic cityscape, complete with realistic object placement and winding, litter-strewn passageways. Also, a pan-out over the rooftops, using the game engine to render the city, was truly impressive.
Driver 3 really has to step up to the mark this time. The gauntlet has been thrown down by Grand Theft Auto 3, and it’s up to Driver to regain its rightful place at the top of the heap.
Expect to see Driver 3 hit PlayStation 2 at Easter 2003.
