In a recent interview with Bloomberg Japan, Tecmo president Junji Nakamura spoke openly(ish) about the progression of the latest game in the Dead or Alive series.
Along with Ninja Gaiden and DOA Extreme Volleyball, Tecmo plans to release Dead or Alive 4 before summer of 2003. He said that all games in progress, especially Ninja Gaiden, are shaping up nicely, with development teams all well on track. He also stated that Team Ninja, the team behind Ninja Gaiden and DOA has expanded somewhat.
But Nakamura refused to specify which platform Dead Or Alive 4 would be released for. “We've received support from Microsoft through advertising which has resulted in strengthening our brand,” he said. “But the main market for the Xbox is still North America.”
Brave words indeed, though undeniably true. The reality of Xbox penetration into Japan is now clear for all to see. After all of Microsoft’s hard work and promises, the machine is still being consistently outsold by every other machine on the market.
Although DOA3 shifted over one million copies throughout the world, sales might have been stronger on another platform. DOA carried the Xbox through its Japanese launch seeing the highest attach-rate of any game for the system.
We will bring you the outcome of this interesting little conundrum as it concludes.
