At a press briefing in Japan development and publishing giant SquareSoft sought to clarify the current situation with Final Fantasy XI, its first online RPG title.

Initially, the firm declared that further maintenance is required to its troubled Play Online server base. The service will be halted for a few hours tomorrow in an attempt to enable players to experience some of the rarer aspects of the game. Players have complained that certain items and monsters are too difficult to find.

Square then said that the promised upgrade to Final Fantasy will go live on July 9. The upgrade will feature a new auction system, new monsters and several new items, as well as an enhanced communications interface.

The company stated that Final Fantasy XI is attracting an average of 55,000 users per play-hour.

Square went on to reiterated the fact that the European version of Final Fantasy X has sold well in excess of 1,000,000 units.
