We have learned that the version of Sega GT 2002 shown at this year’s E3 bears no relation to the initial Xbox version, first seen by us at X01 in late summer last year. The initial version was in somewhat of a shambles, and it seems that Sega was not willing to flog the proverbial dead horse, opting instead for a total remake.
“The first version, first shown in Tokyo then in Cannes was in a state,” a Sega source told us. “As you know, the AI was embarrassing as were some of the bugs. Some of the bugs even ended up with their own pet names they were so shocking, like the “Banzai” bug. That was the one when the computer cars would go crazy and just start rattling around the track at 1000 mph.”
He continued, “The development team spent weeks trying to fix the initial code but eventually just gave up and started again. That’s why the new game is in completely different format. As the team was rebuilding the game engine code, it gave them the opportunity to reshape the gameplay, which is why the game now has the evolution of the cars through the decades.”
So that’s that.
More as it breaks.
