It has emerged that Electronic Arts will not be supporting the Xbox online campaign with one of its biggest games, making it a PlayStation 2 online exclusive instead.
The game, Madden NFL 2003, was thought to be going online for both machines, and fans of the series were looking forward to some cross-platform online action. It now appears that only the PlayStation 2 userbase will be able to partake.
“We are still in discussions, but at this point it does not appear that EA Games or that `Madden Football' will support the online features of the Xbox this year,” said EA spokesman Jeff Brown.
Why such discussions would fail is a matter of some concern. Microsoft has still to fully explain how Xbox Live, its online gaming system, will be funded. It is widely thought that Microsoft will charge users a single small fee to play all online Xbox titles. Apparently, this does not comply with EA’s plans.
More as we get it.
