Ubisoft in Watch_Dogs IP Fraud

Time for us all to pretend we knew what an "express abandonment" meant all along.

Ubisoft in Watch_Dogs IP Fraud
Ubisoft has apparently been caught in a fraud that nearly saw it losing the trademark to the name 'Watch Dogs' (not Watch_Dogs) in the USA.

According to the US Patent Office: "On February 1, 2014, Ubisoft Entertainment received an email from TEAS@uspto.gov notifying Ubisoft Entertainment that a Request for Express Abandonment had been filed in connection with Application Serial No. 85642398. The Request for Express Abandonment purports to be signed by the Chief Executive Officer of Ubisoft Entertainment, Yves Guillemot." But there is a huge "But"...

"Mr. Guillemot, however, did not sign the Request for Express Abandonment, nor did Ubisoft Entertainment file the Request for Express Abandonment. The Request for Express Abandonment is fraudulent and was not filed by Ubisoft Entertainment or its representative.

"As of this filing, the Office has not yet issued a Notice of Abandonment."

So, basically, someone else issued an 'Express Abandonment' request - a filing that gives up a patent or trademark in the USA. And that someone wasn't Ubisoft.

This didn't spot the good folks over at Ubisoft going all out on 'Ubisoft giving up Watch Dogs!!!' of course. Ubi is now working with the USPO to reinstate the defrauded trademark.
