New Year... new challenges for the team at Popcap (owned by EA remember) with a major pair of departures that see the division with one remaining founder member.First up to go is Dave Roberts, chief executive who joined Popcap nearly a decade ago. Next to go is Jason Kapalka, a co-founder of the company. He is, however, doing that 'creative consultant' thing that departing founders are legally obliged to do.
VentureBeat reports that, "Cofounder John Vechey will take over the job of running the Seattle-based studio that created hits like Plants vs. Zombies and Bejeweled. The news will be effective Wednesday, Jan. 8, GamesBeat has learned."
Now, why is this happening? According to Vechey, "We need to get back to the place where we used to be and not just in mobile," before also stating, "PopCap’s mission right now is to create the greatest mobile game studio in the world, and we’re going to do that by only making games that are beloved by players. We’re focusing on our foundation in 2014 – talent, process, and most importantly, great products, around that mission."
Confused? So is Vechey from the sound of it.
