Playstation 2 Processor Shrink-down Looms?
In a recent interview with Japanese journal Microdevice, Sony Computer Entertainment president Ken Kutaragi hinted at the possibility of combining the PlayStation 2’s Emotion Engine and graphics processor into a single microchip.

Talking of changes at the company’s production facility in Nagasaki, Kutaragi stated that serious changes were afoot, as he is expecting to be able to almost triple PlayStation 2 production output, whilst reducing fail-rates and production time.

No mention on how this change will affect the console’s price point was made, though it is expected that the news will make possible the much-rumoured American price-cut, widely expected to be announced at E3.

This news also casts doubt on any imminent PlayStation 3 announcement, the possibility of which has been bandied around by the games industry sewing circle like crazy in recent months.

Considering the unparalleled longevity of the original PlayStation, it seems obvious for Sony to continue to fund further research and development for its PlayStation 2, and this move is without doubt conciliatory within its business strategy.

As ever (especially at this time of year) full details will no doubt emerge at E3 next month, so stay tuned!
