Microsoft Japan sends in Halo

Will Microsoft's killer app boost Japanese opinion?

Microsoft is readying Halo for a Japanese release later this month, in an attempt to turn the tide of apathy displayed by the public towards the machine, since its launch last month.

Due to release on 25th of April, the game has full Japanese language cut scenes and in-game speech, somewhat of a rarity for an American game in Japan.

Following disastrous Easter sales in which the Xbox sold at just over 4% the rate of the PlayStation 2 and 17% of the GameCube, Microsoft Japan needs to find something special if it is not to be completely buried by the competition.

Halo might be the answer, and then again, it might not. Though Halo is an awesome game and graphically supreme, first-person shooters do not tend to fair particularly well with the Japanese. Over in Korea, Thailand and Malaysia, games like Counter Strike make up the gaming mainstay, but the Japanese have never been that impressed.

Anyway, here’s the Japanese box art for Halo. You can look at as you ponder the fate of the Xbox in the Land of the Rising sun.
