Stop Press! Nintendo makes Online Commitment for GameCube!
Nintendo has confirmed that the GameCube will be going online in Japan later this year with other territories to follow. Seemingly, the firm has had its hand forced by Sega, with the imminent release of the GameCube version of Phantasy Star, titled Phantasy Star Online Episode 1 and 2.

Yuji Naka, head of Sega’s Sonic Team has insisted that his flagship online RPG must be just that: online. Though Naka has always stood by the fact that Phantasy Star would be a fully online affair, the lack of commitment from Nintendo to any kind of Internet strategy was slowly setting off alarm bells within the GameCube fraternity.

“If the game is attractive enough it will help GameCube sales,” said Ken Toyoda, a Nintendo spokesman. “The Internet game would give GameCube users a different way to play.”

Nintendo has confirmed that it will be releasing a modem in Japan, capable of both narrowband and broadband transmissions, by June of this year.

News on the European and American online hardware will no doubt surface at E3 this May.
