PS4 "Best Performing Game System in History"

So says lead system architect

PS4 "Best Performing Game System in History"
Yeah, you did read the headline right. Game-design veteran and the PS4's lead system architect, Mark Cerny said it, so it must be right... right?

Anyway to put that in context, what Cerny actually said was: "We had two goals for PS4 development. One was performance. Boosting the performance of the CPU and GPU means prettier graphics and more interactive worlds inside the games — in other worlds, we can have game experiences that put you in the world like never before."

He went on to say that "Our performance goal was to produce specs ten times those of previous consoles, and as a result, I'm confident this is the best-performing game system in history."

That's all very exciting stuff, but after Microsoft undercut Sony with the release date of the Xbox One, which of the consoles do you think will take the top spot?

Pretending, of course, that PCs *right now* have power levels in the mid-range that match PS4, right Mark?

@ergo Ah, you see, he said "game system", and PC's are at best "game rigs". See the nuanced, but crucial difference there? ;)

@config A great system with 8GB of DDR 5 RAM combined with a brilliant system architecture for a cheap price? Getting the most out of the specs for the next 8+ years instead of jacking up the system spec requirements and making it the consumers problem? Exclusive content from developers such as Naughty Dog?? Now do you understand why people are excited, or are you still haemorrhaging money on aPC that will be worth a fraction of its price in a years time?
