Eidos has released details of the next game starring its PlayStation playmate Lara Croft. The game, known variously as Tomb Raider NG or Tomb Raider 6 until now, will be called Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness.

Available only for PlayStation 2 and PC, this game looks set to take on a much darker theme than earlier games, with the obvious intent for players to get under the skin of Lara.

Mike McGarvey, CEO of Eidos said: “Eidos is delighted to be bringing the icon of the PlayStation generation exclusively on to PlayStation 2. With the enormous success of the PlayStation brand, the continuing strong sales of PlayStation 2 and the combined marketing strength of Eidos and Sony, we are confident that Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness will be the biggest and best Tomb Raider game to date.”

Running on a brand new 3D game engine, Lara will now be constructed of over 5,000 polygons as opposed to the 500 in previous games. The game will be a much more real-world affair and looks set to break away from the temples and dolmans seen in previous TR titles.

“The combination of the original PlayStation and Tomb Raider was hugely successful and created a gaming phenomenon,” said Chris Deering, President of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe. “With the adoption of PlayStation 2 growing three times as quickly as the original PlayStation and with well over 6 million PS2 owners in Europe, the Tomb Raider phenomenon is set to go from strength to strength.” Hmm…

The promotional bumph available for the game at this point makes many references to the fact that Lara will be “…struggling with her inner demons” throughout the game. Exactly what this means remains to be seen.
