This figure, though not record-breaking by any means, was consolidated by strong attach rates for software with gamers snapping up an unprecedented 2.5 games with every machine sold. By way of comparison, Sony sold 69,000 launch machines with an average of 1.78 games per-console in the same period.
As we reported yesterday, Halo was the top-selling Xbox game, but it was unable to compete with Konami’s Metal Gear Solid 2 for PlayStation 2 which held the top spot.
“The UK Launch was phenomenal,” we were told by Richard Teversham, Chief of Xbox Marketing. “There were over 300 stores open at midnight across the UK with all stores, from big chains to independent retailers, all fully stocked with Xbox. As this was the first major home console launch to be seen away from Christmas in the UK, we feel we have done remarkably well. The attach rate just goes to show how strong the launch titles were. Our production plant in Hungary is operating at full pace to keep stock levels up and we even had to replenish some retailers on Friday as they had sold out. We are delighted that 85% of all Xbox purchasers also bought a copy of Halo.”
