Sony Computer Entertainment Japan has made some interesting comments relating to the future of the Gran Turismo series that may indicate how far away the PlayStation 3 is from being released.
SCEJ has stated that Gran Turismo 4 will be the same title as Gran Turismo Online and will have both online and offline functionality. Though this was expected by most analysts, what did come as a surprise was the revelation that GT4 will be the last Gran Turismo title to be created for PlayStation 2.
Sony then went on to say that Polyphony Digital, the famed development studio behind the Gran Turismo series, will be creating three more games from the series before GT4, one of which was named as a Korean version of Gran Turismo Concept. The other two titles were not named, and this is where a little confusion creeps in.
It is likely that these two games will be GT Concept American Edition and GT Concept European Edition. Now, with this amount of work to produce for the PlayStation 2, Polyphony Digital, Sony’s flagship development team, will have little time to dedicate to any future platform development, making an E3 PlayStation 3 announcement unlikely.
It has been widely believed that SCE will make some kind of PlayStation 3 announcement at E3 in Los Angeles this May, but this first-party development load would indicate that Sony will be releasing PS2 titles for at least two more years.
