According to a report over at MCV, Sony has told retailers to stop guaranteeing day one pre-orders of the PlayStation 4.The move is thought to be precautionary rather than a cast-iron proclamation that there will be no more stock. MCV claims that Sony believes it will have more stock when launch rolls round.
Furthermore, the site says that some of the stock will be held back to go on shelves. One retail source said that Sony “doesn’t want consumers who couldn’t buy PS4 to buy Xbox One instead”.
While retailers apparently expect Microsoft to follow suit by stopping pre-orders of the Xbox One in the not-too-distant future, the company's retail sales and marketing director Jon Grimes said, “We are currently on track for our most anticipated console launch and are working hard to ensure we are able to meet customer demand.”
