Development of thatgamecompany's Journey, the PlayStation 3 exclusive that won many accolades for being pretty phenomenal (and earned a 10/10 right here), did not come cheap. In fact, it reportedly nearly bankrupted the indie studio. But co-founder Jenova Chen has stated that it has made its money back on the game, and is now seeing royalties.During an interview with
Family Gamer TV, Chen spoke of the game's commercial success. "It is still hard to know, but we made the money back last year, and this year we started to see royalties coming in. So it seems that Journey sales are not really going away. I’m quite curious to see what happens this quarter."
Chen also spoke of thatgamecompany's new project, now that its three-game contract with Sony has ended. It will be funded by venture capitalists, and is currently at a very early stage in development. "It’s been almost a year now and we are still in a very pre, pre-production mode. It’s always been the pattern of thatgamecompany that we spent 75 per cent of time doing R&D and a smaller portion of time on production," he said to the
Telegraph.
Blimey, let's hope it doesn't almost-bankrupt itself again doing this one!
