Perhaps it's best that always-online gaming isn't all that ubiquitous just yet. Electronic Arts is facing another consumer backlash after having to pull Darkspore from Steam. The move follows a string of server problems preventing players from accessing or saving their game. Problems that EA has no intention of fixing."
Darkspore is no longer developed. It is for almost all intents and purposes an abandoned title," reads a
statement on the game's official forum. "If you cannot play the game and have flicked through technical issues for any fixes, then contact EA Customer Support; especially if it regards CD-Keys or refunds.
"Error 73003 has gone unfixed & remains an issue. Error Code 3 has arisen for the majority/all and remains an issue. I wish you all luck, no matter what path you choose with
Darkspore." The game is still available to purchase from EA's Origin service, so buyer beware.
It's not a good situation for EA or developer Maxis, which recently courted controversy with a catastrophic
SimCity launch. Like
Darkspore before it,
SimCity requires a constant online connection to function. EA's support for
Darkspore, and the seemingly throwaway nature of game development, does not bode well for either
SimCity's future or that of consoles which wish to adopt an online-only strategy.
