Electronic Arts has formally announced Need for Speed: Rivals, the next game in the popular urban racing series.

The focus on the game's development, according to the developers, was to create something that included seamless multiplayer features. To that end, a demonstration was played out where a PC player began in a single-player mode, began a race by waiting at a junction, and ended up racing against a foe who joined on his iPad.

Ghost Games, a new EA studio, is working on Need for Speed: Rivals, but it's suggested that Criterion could be assisting in some way. Craig Sullivan from the British studio took the stage to help demonstrate the game.
