Electronic Arts has announced that it will be abandoning its Online Pass system for all future titles. The initiative, introduced in 2010 to combat used game sales, was not received well by users, according to the company."Yes, we're discontinuing Online Pass," said John Reseburg, EA's senior director of corporate communication, to
VentureBeat. "None of our new EA titles will include that feature.
"Initially launched as an effort to package a full menu of online content and services, many players didn’t respond to the format. We’ve listened to the feedback and decided to do away with it moving forward."
It does make you wonder - if EA isn't finding any return from the Online Pass, could it bring forth a new initiative to replace it for the next-generation? Time will tell if this is the first stage in a shrewd business move, or a goodwill gesture to disgruntled gamers.
